What to take to Namibia

By Ben Waterworth

When you head to Namibia there are numerous different activities that you will no doubt have planned and several of these activities will require special things to pack to ensure you have a good and comfortable time on them. One such thing would be a Safari in which you would need to pack all sorts of specific items to ensure that you do have a great time! Here are some tips for you to consider when packing for safaris and other general activities you may find yourself doing when you travel to Namibia.

  • Certain safari companies will restrict you to certain amounts of baggage when in their cars and other vehicles for the safari. Some common restrictions include have only 1 bag not exceeding 12kgs and being no bigger than 65x46cm. You should pack all personal belongings in a smaller duffle or sports bag so that you can easily meet these requirements. Always make sure you take a sleeping bag with you too! Don't forget!

  • It's probably common for you to take with you as much clothing as possible but you should remember that you will be out in the wilderness with limited space so you should only take what you need. Work out items that you are taking that really won't be that necessary and take with you the items that will be, such as strong pants, walking shoes and hats. Don't worry too much about change of clothes, all of the other people on the safari will be in the same situation and smell just like you do!

  • You should also take into consideration the various laws and cultures of different countries you enter. Some countries have laws in regards to what can be exposed and how certain clothing can and can't be worn. Always check into this before you enter certain countries as you could find yourself faced with a fine or even worse prosecution.

  • Always take with you plenty of spare water, torches, shavers, note pad and don't forget your camera too! There are many other items to take and you should do as much research as possible before venturing out on a safari.
